THE Kondinin Shire was recently awarded a $5,000 SGIO Communityhelp grant to fund its rehabilitation and education programs.
The shire will use the funding to rehabilitate seven hectares of disused gravel pits and educate students on the benefits of rehabilitation.
SGIO State manager Colin Tierney said the Communityhelp grants program is designed to assist local community groups improve safety within their local area.
Kondinin Shire community development officer Rebecca Meikle said the grant meant the shire was able to engage with young people on the importance of rehabilitation as well as helping establish links with other organisations.
“The funding from SGIO means we can now provide our local children with a fantastic educational tool that sparks their imagination and desire to do the right thing by the environment,” she said.
“We can also apply this educational tool to outside organisations and strengthen the bond between us and other likeminded organisations.”
The Communityhelp grants program is a State-wide program which has SGIO working with local communities addressing local issues.
“The grants program supports local organisations which are working to make our communities safer,” Mr Tierney said.
Community groups can apply to receive a grant in the areas of road safety, crime prevention, emergency readiness and response or environmental initiatives.
