Housing shortage addressed

CUNDERDIN has the potential to attract hundreds of new residents with a subdivision to be created within a kilometre of the main street.

The Cunderdin Shire recently approved the subdivision of 21 hectares of land which will release 76 lots ranging in size from 10,300 square metres to 2,000 square metres.

Shire president Graham Cooper said it is an historic project for the Cunderdin Shire.

“Like other rural towns, we are negatively impacted by a lack of housing,” he said.

“This project addresses that issue and enables the shire to have a more secure and exciting future.”

The lots will be released in five stages with expressions of interest for the first stage being invited soon. There will be 10 lots initially, with two already sold.

Each will have access to power, water and communications, including broadband capabilities.

While strongly supported by the shire, the subdivision – known as Cunderdin Crest Estate - is a private undertaking by long time Cunderdin resident John Harris.

Mr Harris started working on the project several years ago.

“It came about because of what I saw as a significant demand for housing in Cunderdin,” he said.

“I’m passionate about the town and want to continue living here into the future in a lively, vibrant community.

“To achieve that we need to attract more people and by

releasing this land we can offer the perfect opportunity for anyone who still wants to be close enough to Perth but can see the rewards which come with a rural lifestyle.”

Mr Harris said the larger blocks will probably be sold to people who may have bought into a rural area, maybe closer to the coast, some time ago and are finding it is becoming urbanised and want to get back to more open country living.

He said the smaller lots will be attractive to people who want an affordable block of land, where they can build their own house in a safe, family oriented environment that is easy driving distance to Perth.

“Cunderdin has the luxury of excellent facilities including an airport, railway station and access to Great Eastern Highway,” he said.

“We also have a large number of vibrant sporting clubs, community organisations and a range of services many other country towns can’t boast.

“Living here is like having the best of both worlds, a great country community with easy access to the city.”

The land is being sold by Landmark Kellerberrin.
