A MERREDIN man was hit by an east bound freight train in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Geoff Lee was treated by St John Ambulance volunteers at the scene before being taken to the Merredin hospital and later flown to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctors Service.
Mr Lee crossed the railway tracks near the Merredin station and was struck by the train.
When a second train passed the area about two hours later, the driver spotted the injured man and raised the alarm.
Mr Lee underwent surgery at Royal Perth Hospital on Saturday night for a fractured pelvis and leg and had part of his right foot amputated.
A Royal Perth Hospital spokesperson said on Monday morning, Mr Lee was in the trauma unit and his condition was improving.
The East-West rail line was closed for about two hours on Saturday night while police attended to the injured man and examined the Barrack Street scene.
