A FEDERAL Government plan to offer a $150 voucher for teen dental care has been rejected by Merredin MLA Brendon Grylls.
Government statistics show from July 1 more than one million teenagers will be eligible for dental care every year under the Medicare plan.
Health and Aging Minister Nicola Roxon said the plan will make it more affordable for families to keep their children’s teeth in good health.
However, Mr Grylls said rural people were unable to readily access dental services and in most cases, dental surgeries were booked out weeks in advance.
He said the State Government should be doing more for the school dental units which visits primary schools in rural areas.
Currently, the Wheatbelt unit visits South Merredin Primary School for the first part of the year, then visits schools around the district.
The teen dental plan allows families who receive Family Tax Benefit Part A to receive up to $150 per year for each child aged 12 to 17 years.
Teenagers in the same age group receiving Youth Allowance or Abstudy will also be eligible.
