Race on for central seat

21/08/2008 11:35:00 AM
POLITICAL aspirants met in Merredin last week to witness the draw of candidate names for positioning on the upcoming State election ballot papers.

The Christian Democrat Party candidate Ross Patterson got the coveted top position, followed by Yvonne Dols for Greens WA, Stephen Strange for the Liberal Party, Gerry Sturman for the Labor Party, Brendon Grylls for the National Party and Judy Sudholz for the Citizens Electoral Council.

Mr Strange and Mr Grylls were the only candidates present to watch as the six names were announced and placed into a barrel for the draw.

Changes in the electoral boundaries mean the Central Wheatbelt seat covers a much larger area and parties have indicated a strong desire to win the new electorate.

Mr Grylls has indicated his party will not form a coalition with the Liberals regardless of how many seats the Liberals win, but will be seeking the balance of power to ensure country voters get a fair deal.

Mr Strange said he has invited shadow ministers to visit the Wheatbelt to talk to voters.

The first to arrive will be Shadow Health Minister Kim Hames next week.

The Wheatbelt Mercury will profile the candidates next week to help voters as they consider who its is they want to represent them after the September 6 election.
