Carnival to beat winter blues

A WINTER sports carnival for students from Years 4 to 7 will be conducted in Merredin this Sunday.

The Smarter than Smoking Junior Winter Carnival will be played at the Merredin Regional Community and Leisure Centre.

The carnival is being organised for students in the eastern Wheatbelt to participate in a sporting competition comprising of netball, football and hockey.

Teams nominating for each sport include Merredin, Narembeen, Southern Cross, Kellerberrin and Corrigin for football and Merredin, Mukinbudin, Bruce Rock and a combined Narembeen/Corrigin team for hockey.

In netball, Cunderdin, Merredin, Yilgarn and Kellerberrin will supply two teams each and Narembeen and Quairading will supply one each.

It is expected to have local and State sporting representatives and talent development officers at the carnival.

The sporting fixture is being sponsored by Healthway, the Co-operative Bulk Handling Group, Landmark, Wesfarmers Federation Insurance and Bankwest, Westpac and the Merredin Sports Council.

Community members are being encouraged to attend the carnival and support the students as they battle it out on the sporting arena.
