TWO Merredin youths are living their dream after being selected to play in the West Perth Football Club under 16s.
Luke Carr and Darren Flockart were selected to play for the West Perth side after showing talent with the West Perth Yilgarn Falcons development squad last year.
Carr, who plays for Nukarni, and Flockart, who plays for Burracoppin, are two of only three country members of the squad of about 35.
The two will be invited to talk with West Perth in September with the prospect of playing in their Colts team next year.
The two Merredin Senior High School students began training at Arena Joondalup in February last year and have travelled each Monday for training.
With the help of their parents, they leave Merredin at about 12.30pm and arrive at Joondalup at 4pm, ready to begin training.
Once training is complete, they shower and begin the return trip to reach home by about 11pm.
The families took turns to transport the footballers and estimate the cost to be around $200 to $300 each week for fuel and food.
The families said they had completed about 12 trips each and were thankful for their considerate employers.
The two young footballers have played in six games against other WAFL under 16s squads during various school holiday periods.
Both players said it had been an exceptional learning experience with quality coaches and intense training.
They said they had the opportunity to play in front of big crowds at WAFL games but the travelling was hard.
The parents of the two said it was difficult on the young players as they were expected to perform after spending three hours travelling.
Both families said although it cost a lot and put pressure on their jobs and home life, it was an experience that they would not have denied the boys.
