THE Merredin Golf Club’s annual Amateur Sands is on August 15 to 17 and early indications are for a large field of competitors.
The event starts on Friday, August 15 with a four ball better ball competition sponsored by Ag Implements of Merredin.
Entrants of the Friday event will have a chance to win a golfing package at the Joondalup Golf Resort and be included in a draw to win a quality golf package valued at $1,000.
Saturday and Sunday is the championship rounds with entries expected from around the State.
This year includes gross and nett events, overall and daily winners and gross and nett team events.
Entertainment has been arranged for members and visitors on Friday and Saturday nights at the club house with meals available and the bar open.
The Merredin Golf Club has attracted more than 50 big name sponsors for this year’s event and is offering trophies to the value of $10,000 during the weekend.
Last year the four ball better ball event attracted a strong field of 98 entries.
Eventual winners were Peter Madigan and Angelo Trunfio from Merredin with 52 points for the day.
The main event featured golfers from as far afield as Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Mandurah and Perth and started in perfect conditions on Saturday morning.
The eventual gross winner was Darren Mottershead from Merredin with scores of 70 and 69 off the stick for the weekend, being five under par for the event.
Second in the gross was last year’s winner, Carl Narke from Kalgoorlie with a 70 and 73 off the stick.
Nett winner for the weekend was Glen Crees from Merredin with a 69 and 63, followed by Bruce Haggerty from Merredin with 65 and 67.
