Meckering, Tammin win grand final berths

21/08/2008 11:52:00 AM
KELLERBERRIN hosted the East Avon Women’s Hockey Association’s first and second semi-finals at the weekend, in superb spectator but warm playing conditions.

The first semi-final was played between Meckering and

Cunderdin and was a nail biting game.

Both teams played strong hockey and at full time the score was one all.

An additional seven and a half minutes each way was played, with Meckering scoring two goals during this time, and winning the match.

Goal scorers for Meckering were Brianne Hitchcock and

Nicolee Laird with two, and for Cunderdin, Teri Jasper scored one.

The second semi-final was a clash between first and second placed Merredin and Tammin.

Merredin began well, forcing a short corner within minutes of the first whistle, but were unable to convert.

Tammin then turned the momentum and at the 15 minute mark scored the first goal of the game from field

play by Gemma Charlton.

Merredin were able to temporarily even the score when they were awarded a penalty flick, and Roxanne Baker

capitalized on the opportunity.

Tammin responded within minutes with a second goal deflected by Carolyn Stokes into the net.

Tammin continued with their intensity following the half time break and continued to pressure Merredin’s

defence resulting in a third goal off another deflection.

Merredin persisted and Terri Rogers cracked Merredin’s second goal to keep them in the game at the half way mark of the second half.

Tammin was unrelenting and once again responded to the challenge, scoring their fourth goal within the

final five minutes from running field play, and sealing the match.

The final score reflected a four to two win to Tammin, who will now play off in the grand final on August 30.

Best Player for Merredin went to Caroline Bush, and

Coach’s Award was awarded to Rebecca Hutton. Janelle Jones was the recipient of the Red Box Award.

Both games were umpired superbly by visiting WA Hockey

Association umpires.

Merredin must now play Meckering on August 23 in the

Preliminary Final which will be held in Kellerberrin at 2.30pm.
